BIO-TIOLET

is a women-led business organization engaged in providing bio-toilets for poor, urban families as well as families in peri-urban areas. The bio-toilet system disposes human waste and saves energy, conserves water and produces energy in the form of biogas.

Key facts:

The problem

Open defecation takes place in parts of rural India every day. Almost 50% of households do not have sewage connection and only 21% of wastewater is treated. Around 80% of rural households have water for only five hours a day and over 70% of households do not have access to toilets.

The solution

This activity is introducing a bio-toilet system which disposes human waste and saves energy, conserves water and produces energy in the form of biogas. These bio-toilet systems meet the need for a basic, easy-to-install and hygienic human waste disposal mechanism in areas with no infrastructural facilities, such as sewage treatment plants. It also addresses the need for a cheaper and easy-to-operate alternative to the traditional waste disposal system. The sanitation systems can be installed in places where conventional toilets facilities cannot be made available.

Helping the planet

These toilets are preventing human waste from entering waterways. The bio-toilet systems also produce energy in the form of biogas which can be used for household purposes.

Helping people

Bio-toilets are a solution to lack of toilets for poor workers as well as for labourers working for construction and infrastructure companies.

Scaling Up

This activity is a safe and risk-free social enterprise working at a grassroots level. It has tremendous scope for scalability. To further build capacity, this activity is hiring technicians, upgrading their manufacturing facilities and targeting an international market.
